Fun With Film

By Richard Hamilton, May 8, 2009 8:56 am

This past weekend, our teen ministry video team met for the first time. We wanted the students to get some hands on experience with digital video cameras and editing software. After lunch, a quick discussion of what we were hoping to do, and a crash course in videography, we let the student loose. Here is one of the videos that resulted.

Fun With Film: World’s Most X-Treme Baller from richard hamilton on Vimeo.

Obviously, this video was not intended to convey some deeply spiritual or religious message. We are hoping though, that our students will be given a new avenue to express themselves. Video is much more accessible today than it has been in the past. As a result, we find that many students are interested in it.

For us, this is only one piece of a much larger scheme. We want students to feel free to be creative and expressive. Some students will find their voice in the arts and media. Our student ministry hopes to cultivate creativity.

I’m interested in how other faith communities are equipping people to be creative and expressive. Please chime in and let me know; I want to hear from you.

Winning When It Counts: a shout out to my little bro

By Richard Hamilton, April 7, 2009 10:29 am

Thanks to a dominate Carolina victory in the NCAA National Championship, my brother Thomas topped the annual Big Rich’s March Madness Tourney Challenge hosted by yours truly (and ESPN).

Had UConn shown up in their Final Four Match-up, my bracket would have been on top, but, oh well. Go Heels!!

The Best Rivalry in All of Sports. Period.

Skins vs Cowboys. Sox vs Yankees. Michigan vs the Ohio State. Ali vs Frazier. They’ve got nothing on Carolina-Duke.

Maybe if Ali and Frazier had moved into the same neighborhood. Or if the Big 10 was a consistent football threat.

Unless you have experienced the intensity, the passion, the pure vitriol that is Carolina vs Duke, you do not understand. Separated by 8 miles and a few shades of blue, these two teams defy understanding and are not confined by stats or predictions. Something magical happens when they meet. This is the most explosive, most dynamic, most entertaining match-up in sports. Period.

ESPN.com
has a great piece on the history of this rivalry.

I know this is a departure from my regular content (culture, technology, the church, Christian spirituality), but Carolina travels over to Cameron Indoor tonight and the two titans of college basketball clash at 9:05 EST on ESPN. Tonight should be a good one. It’s bigger than the fact that they are both top 5 teams (Carolina #3, Duke #5). Here are a few facts that will make tonight’s game special.

-Carolina has won the last 3 at Cameron (4 of the last 5)
-Hansboro has the chance to go 4-0 at Cameron (the last team to do this was Wake Forest with Tim Duncan)
-Hansboro is the returning Player of the Year
-Both teams are 7-2 in the ACC
-A #1 seat for March could be effected

No matter what, if you like sports, tonight is a must see!
